January Club Meeting Round-Up & Project Reveal!

We had a great meeting tonight! Thanks to the 21 people that made it out tonight. Sharon Whitehill, and two other representatives from the Nixa Community Foundation came out to the meeting to award us our grant for $1950.00 for the upcoming repeater projects. Watch for the positive press in the Nixa Newspaper as well as the Christian County Headliner and the Nixa Xpress.

James Adkins, KB0NHX, and Kent Doucey, N0IRM, accepted the grant check and thanked the foundation for the grant and their past and continued support of the club and our efforts to improve emergency communications in the Ozarks.

Afterwards, we unveiled the club's new project for 2012. The project is a combined effort from the Nixa Amateur Radio Club, the Southwest Amateur Radio Group in Newton County, and the Missouri Highway Patrol Amateur Radio Club, KM0HP. We will be building a 3-repeater linked system to cover Southwest Missouri. All areas of the 18-county Region D are will have radio coverage. The repeaters will be linked 100% of the time by RF and open to ALL amateurs for use of every day communications, for special events, or during disasters as needed.

The K0NXA Springfield repeater will be on 147.015+, PL 162.2 Hz and will be located on the East County tower site about 5 miles East of Springfield on Chestnut Expressway. The antenna will be at 400' above ground level, and will consist of a Daniel's MT-2 repeater with a 75a Duracomm power supply and 300-Watt Crescend amplifier. The TX RX duplexers are on order, and we need to raise approximately $1600 to pay for the antenna installation, purchase coax and jumpers, and a rack mount shelf for the power supply. The repeater is located in the hardened Greene County TRS building and has battery and generator backup capable of running the equipment for several weeks. Special thanks to the Greene County TRS, Mercury Towers, TA Total High-Speed Wireless, the Yukon Amateur Radio Association, TX RX, and SCOM controllers, and Andrew for their contributions to this repeater site.

*** Proposed Coverage Map for the 147.015 Repeater ***

The 147.015 & 145.390 repeaters will link to the club's new K0NXA 442.150+ Repeater, PL 162.2 Hz, to be located in Crane, MO high atop one of the Crane city water towers.
The repeater is a Motorola Micor, 125-Watt repeater. The Andrew DB-420 antenna will be mounted at 200 feet AGL. The repeater will be located in the hardened, climate controlled Verizon wireless building, and will have battery and generator backup for ultimate reliability. Should this site fail, the backup linking repeater will be the 442.275 repeater on Cox South Hospital, which also has generator backup power. We want to give a special thanks to Verizon Wireless, the City of Crane, and Andrew Corporation for their contributions to this site. For this site, we need $300 to purchase the IRLP computer and interface, $300 to purchase the EchoLink computer and interface, and $75 to purchase interface cables and connectors.

*** Proposed Coverage Map for the 442.150 Repeater ***

The last piece of the puzzle is the KM0HP 145.390- repeater, PL 91.5 Hz. The repeater is sponsored by the Missouri Highway Patrol Amateur Radio Club and the Southwest Amateur Radio Group in Neosho. The repeater is a 110-Watt GE Master III repeater with SCOM 7330 controller and TX RX duplexers. The DB-224 antenna will be mounted at 300 feet AGL. The repeater will be located in the Missouri Highway Patrol's hardened concrete aggregate building and will have battery and generator backup power, capable of running the site for several weeks. Again, this repeater will link full time to the Granby 442.150 repeater. The only expense left for this site is to purchase a UHF link radio for $325.00. Special thanks to Andrew Corporation, TX RX and Midwest Mobile Radio Service (Motorola Radio Shop) in St. Joseph, MO for their contributions to this repeater.

Below is a combined coverage map for the entire system when completed - Green indicates 147.015 coverage, Red indicates 442.150 coverage, and Blue indicates 145.390 coverage.

In addition to the 3 linked repeaters, the system will also have an IRLP node and an EchoLink node for VoIP and linking use. And, a Raytheon JPS NXU-2A commercial VoIP link will be online, allowing SEMA and other public service agency hams to use existing dispatch consoles and mobile command centers equipped with such devices to link into the system if amateur equipment is not available, or if they are not in range of the linked repeater system, such as an emergency NCS at the SEMA radio room in Jefferson City, MO.

We are looking for your help to raise the remaining $2500 to $3000 to complete the project and get all 3 repeaters on the air. With the coax and antennas arriving by the end of February, it will soon be time to finish the projects. Club member Larry Grinstead, WA0JZK, will be putting together a brochure for us to take around to local businesses and seek the necessary donations to complete the project. Remember, we are a 501(c)3, and all donations are 100% tax deductible! As a club, this is "our" project, and we want everyone to participate so that they feel like they can take ownership in the system, and be proud to help provide such a system to the region. This will not only be good for everyone in our club, but all amateurs in Southwest Missouri. We are asking everyone to get involved by asking for donations from business people you know,and even those you don't know, or by writing grants to fund the project. Dean Gaines, KC0SQD-SK, was one of the best. Several years ago, he raised hundreds of dollars going into numerous businesses around town. Every business would make a donation, anywhere from $25 to $100 and more! Any amount helps!!

A system like this will be perfect for the annual MS-150 bike ride so that people all along the route can communicate back and forth between Joplin and Springfield. Mobile and stationary severe weather spotters and all ARES & RACES groups will also be welcome to use the system as needed.

We will be providing updates each month at the club meeting, so if you want to know how the system is progressing, make sure to come out! Our next meeting is Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Nixa Fire Department General HQ, located at 301 S. Nicholas Rd in Nixa, MO.

Nixa ARC Christmas Dinner - Saturday, December 10th @ 6:00 p.m.

Hello everyone,

Our Christmas Dinner is approaching fast and I wanted to give everyone a update on what is being brought so far so it might give some ideas on what to bring in case anyone is undecided. 8 people have RSVP'ed with me so far and here is what we have coming with them;

The club will be bringing the napkins, plates and cups to drink from.

224.280 - Repeater Inteference Update

The club's 1.25-meter repeater, the 224.280 repeater, negative offset, is also located at Cox South Hospital in Springfield. At almost the same time as we started receiving interference on the 442.275 repeater, we also started having problems with receive sensitivity on the 224.280. The interference appeared to be there all the time. This coincidence has hindered progress getting the problem resolved.

Club leadership felt it was more important to tackle interference on the 442.275 repeater since it had more use.

While at the site, with the UHF repeater interference resolved, James looked into the interference to this repeater as well and confirmed that it is the 72.720 MHz GPS Synchronization transmitter used by the hospital to synchronize all the clocks inside the hospital patient rooms!

This interference, which also began about 6 months ago, has been reported to the hospital. We found the unit not operating properly several months ago - it was transmitting 24/7. Normally, it transmits from 39 minutes after the hour to 9 minutes after the hour. Cox engineering contacted the company, who found several problems with the unit, and they replaced it completely. This did not fix the amplifier, however. The unit, manufactured by Primex out of Canada, uses a TPL amplifier for use in the 70 MHz band. The amplifier itself is not type accepted by the FCC and is produced for export use only. It is a very dirty amplifier with no output filtering. Primex gets the unit and their exciter type accepted as a single unit and imports it back to the US.

Today, James measured 45-watts of RF on the 3rd harmonic of 218.160 MHz. With a third harmonic that powerful, it is desensing our receiver and we are hearing that transmitters data on the input to our repeater.

You may have heard it - it sounds like desense noise like when your repeater's duplexers are not tuned properly. James checked our duplexers today and found them to be in tune properly, ruling out desense from our transmitter. However, when the GPS transmitter was unplugged during the middle of an interference burst, the problem went away immediately.

Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, is working with a representative at Cox to help us get the problem resolved.

We hope this problem will be resolved soon as well so the repeater can be turned back on and used by everyone once again.

If you have a tri-band HT, or other 220 rig, maybe you have a mobile that's been shelved for awhile and not used, or maybe you haven't programmed your 220 frequencies into your new rig because you didn't know we had a 220 repeater in Springfield, make sure and program in the 224.280 repeater with a negative offset. The PL tone is 162.2 Hz. Watch this website and the Nixa Hams Yahoo! group for updates and details announcing when the problem is resolved and it will be back on the air.

442.275 Repeater Interference Resolved!

Today, James Adkins, KB0NHX, met with the field technician for Midwest Paging in an attempt to finally resolve the interference we were receiving from his 454.300 paging transmitter.

For those that are not aware, we started receiving interference on the repeater about 6 months ago when Midwest Paging installed a paging transmitter on 454.300 MHz. They installed a 6-element Yagi about 10 feet away from our UHF repeater antenna, running at 600-Watts ERP! This was creating quite a problem for us.

Upon arriving, we took desense measurements. The atmospheric desense measured at 6 microvolts. When the paging transmitter was on the air, it increased to 181 microvolts!

The technician moved the transmitter to another UHF yagi of theirs mounted on the west side of the Cox South penthouse, the opposite side of the building from us. After doing this, we still had minimal desense. Upon James's request, he moved the antenna from vertical to horizontal polarization. After this was done, the paging transmitter would not cause even the weakest signal to fall out of the repeater.

We encourage everyone to try out the UHF repeater if you haven't. It is a great repeater. Just program it in with a positive offset and a PL of 162.2 Hz. Today, Gary Doucey, N0IRN, worked the machine from downtown Aurora, Kent Doucey, N0IRM, worked it from Galena with as little as 2-watts on an HT, and James Adkins, KB0NHX, worked it from Halltown mobile & on an HT with 1/2 of a watt!

The repeater does have an IRLP node, #3995, and stays connected to the Missouri Linking Reflector channel of 9195. Generally, the repeater is also linked with the 444.450 repeater in Lees Summit and the 444.375 repeater in Holden. There is usually a lot of good conversation that takes place on this machine, we encourage you to try it out if you don't already frequent the machine.

You can also check into the Thursday night Nixa ARC "NARC" net on this repeater. So, make it your UHF home channel today!

Bill McNamee, KB0WHN, passed away this last week. As mentioned at the November club meeting, Bill had just a few weeks to live. The club sends its condolences to all of Bill's Family.

Bill was a long time member of the club. He always enjoyed participating in Nixa Bike Ride and the Tour de Bass. Thanks to Bill, the club was able to get it's original 444.275 UHF repeater when his employer, Associated Wholesale Grocers, de-commissioned the Motorola R1225 repeater and Bill asked for and obtained permission for us to have it. The repeater was not working when I received it, but myself and Doug Schumpert, K5DPS, took the repeater apart and located the problem and fixed it.

Bill was also very involved with the fundraiser for the 53.270 repeater project, and for raising funds by collecting the Price Cutter bucks when they had that problem.

Bill will be missed and his contributions and willingness to be actively involved in the club were greatly appreciated.

November Club Meeting - THIS Saturday, November 12, at Nixa Pizza Hut @ 6:00 p.m.

The Nixa ARC's November meeting will be held at the Nixa Pizza Hut, located at US Hwy 160 (aka S. Campbell) and RT CC, just north of Nixa, on Saturday, November 12th.

The VE Testing session will be held before the meeting at 4:30 p.m. with the club meeting starting at 6:00 p.m. Feel free to bring the family out to share in the pizza extravaganza!

At this meeting, we'll be voting for the position of Treasurer for the next 4 years. Nominated are the current treasurer, Jeff Morrissey, KB0WVT, and Terry Zembsch, KC0SQE.

There will be no formal presentation at the meeting, but as a topic of discussion, be thinking about any experiences you've had with lightening strikes at your QTH. This will lead into our December presentation on proper station grounding for both lightening protection and for RFI mitigation

For those of you new to the club, the Pizza Hut is the original place that we held our meetings for several years, and we like to go back there once a year in November to remember our roots. There will not be a buffet at that time, so you can either order for you and your family, just for your self, or team up with someone else and split a pizza. The Hut has always been very accommodating to us!

So, invite a family and / or a friend and come out and enjoy pizza & ham radio this month at the Nixa Pizza Hut! We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Kansas City Satellite Team Presentation at the Nixa ARC Club Meeting - Saturday, October 8, 2011

For those of you that missed it, you missed probably one of the best presentations we've ever had. The KC Satellite team did an outstanding job presenting just how easy it is to work satellites with just your HT. They showed us some of the tricks of the trade and even had audio and video clips of QSO's from BOTH ends!

Many were indeed surprised how easy it is to work "the birds." They had on hand a nice Arrow handheld yagi that is their bread and butter antenna, and talked about other antennas they've tried and didn't like as well. We even discussed high gain HT antennas and how they can make a huge difference working satellites.

Fall Picnic THIS Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

It's that time of year again - time for our annual fall picnic. The weather is looking really good for Saturday, with a high of 76 degrees and sunny!

Here's the scoop: Nixa City Park (the original park - behind the Super 8 Motel). We have the pavilion rented from 5:15 p.m. to dark. Here's how you can get there: Take US Hwy to Wasson Drive (there's a Braums, Ozark Bank, Price Chopper, and Cody's gas station on the 4 corners at this stop light). Then, go East on Wasson to Fort St. At this intersection, turn left and travel North to the city park, which will be on your left. For those of you that came last year, this is the same spot and same pavilion as last year.

Everyone is welcome! The club is providing the hamburgers, hot dogs drinks and paper plates / napkins / silverware, all we ask is that if you come, please bring a desert or side dish or both.

Dale Bagley, K0KY, and Keith Haye, WE0G, will be at our picnic representing the ARRL and awarding the club it's Special Services Club certificate. Please come out and give them a warm welcome.

If you have kids, the playground is nearby and they had a blast last year playing. Some of the kids also kicked a soccer ball around and played frisbee. We even had a couple of guys bring out their HF rigs and set up their portable stations and show off.

If you have a new "ham" toy from the recent hamfest, ebay, etc., feel free to bring it out and show it off, or get some assistance with getting it programmed, or using it. I'm sure there'll be someone there that will know.

Also, for those of you that ordered the Nixa ARC "Hamster" shirts, Rod Kittleman, K0ADI, will have them at the picnic and we'll be getting those to you. Please submit your check or exact cash for your shirt at that time, cost is $15 per shirt. We do have several extras (larger sizes) if anyone is interested. We will try to have those there as well.

Once again we had a full house at the club meeting this month. Another successful VE session with one new ham and one upgrade, and 2 new club members!

Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC, updated us on EchoLink. The interface at the site has some type of problem which requires it to be reset about once a month. So, he went to the site and hooked the power up to the remote reset device so we can remotely reset it. We will look into getting a new pic chip for it, and a second IC, cost of about $15 as opposed to $144 for a new one. This unit was given to the club by John Kreymer, N5LKM, so we don't have anything invested in it.

James Adkins, KB0NHX, had a conference call with Bryon and Mike of Mercury Towers in Kansas City about the East TRS install. The original quote from PDQ Towers of $2825 is a good price, but we feel we can do better. We hope to have a formal quote from them in the next couple of weeks.

James also had e-mail correspondence with officials from the Missouri Highway Patrol communications division reference remote receivers at Granby and Milo for the 53.270 repeater. Though we do not have the okay to move forward with an install, they re-affirmed their position that when the new Motorola statewide radio system tower work is complete, we will draft up an MOU (Memorandum of understanding) which will allow us to install the receivers at those locations. Granby (by Joplin) will be our Southwest receiver, and Milo (near Nevada, MO), will be our Northwest receiver.

Jeremy Tannehill, KC0UJZ, and James Adkins, KB0NHX, traversed to Cox Hospital to find out what is causing the severe interference to our 224.280 and 442.275 repeaters. They determined that the hospitals clock synchronization transmitter on 72.720 MHz is the culprit. The 50-watt amplifier's 3rd harmonic is on 218.160, close to our input of 222.680. We are getting at least 40-watts INDUCED into our 224.280 repeater antenna! The 6th harmonic is on 436.320, and it's signal is at 0 dBm! When the unit begins modulation, the amplifier goes spurious. Since this is also affecting Verizon's reception of mobile phones at the site between 825 and 835 MHz, they will be contacting the hospital and pushing for the unit to be replaced or fixed.

We also discussed Field Day, which was probably our most successful and fun Field Day to date! With almost 1700 contacts, we had 18 people set up, and 31 different people operate. And, for the first time ever, we had all 3 stations running for 24 consecutive hours thanks to several dedicated people that stayed and operated all night. Next year, we will add a 3rd tri-band beam by using the Mosely TA-33 donated by Dick Higinbotham, K0GL. Kent Doucey, N0IRM, will be looking at the beam and re-building it for FD next year. This will allow us to work digital on a band besides 40-meters this year.

Next month, John Rayfield, N0EUG, will be doing his presentation on proper station grounding. You will all want to come out to this presentation and learn about grounding, it will be a very good presentation. We will also be planning an antenna party for the club's HF station. We had some wind damage to the HF dipole, and need to get it straightened back up, so you'll be hearing about that upcoming event soon.

Technical Committee Update:

Interference on the 220 and 440 repeaters has been identified and is being pursed with the responsible parties.

We are waiting for a quote to install the 6m receiver for the East TRS tower site. We should have this within the next couple of weeks.

EchoLink is up and working well once again on the 145.270 repeater. The power for the interface was re-routed through our remote power reset switch so that the device can be reset remotely.

Nixa ARC Field Day 2011 - Everyone Welcome!

The Nixa ARC Field Day event is coming up this weekend, Saturday June 25th through Sunday June 26th.
This years event will be held at the Nixa High Pointe Elementary located at 900 N. Cheyenne Rd in Nixa.

We will begin setting up the Missouri Highway Patrol mobile command center at 7:30 a.m., along with the HF beam antenna supports, and begin operating at 1:00 p.m.

We have 3 stations lined up, all capable of running CW, SSB or Digital PSK31 or RTTY. This year's event will consist of two Yaesu FT-920's and a Yaesu FT-950 and for 6-meter SSB a Yaesu FT-450.

To raise funds for the club and to help offset the cost of Field Day, Arlen Evins, N6DDD, and his wife Marci are donating a turquoise pendant. The turquoise is from the world famous Kingman Mine in Arizona and is mounted in genuine Sterling Silver with Sterling bead accents. The piece is all handcrafted by me personally, and is done in the style made popular by the Navajo Indians in the great American Southwest

The stone measures 22mm long and 12mm wide. Overall length or the pendant including the bail is 37mm and it weighs just under 4.5 grams, so it isn't a tiny piece, but not so large as to be gaudy:-) Retail value is $60. No chain is included, but most any size or length can be used. You can purchase your chance to win for $1; or get 6 chances for $5! This would be a beautiful gift for anyone.

We are looking for operators to come out and operate the radio, or log the contacts in the computer. With 3 stations, all capable of multiple modes, we should be able to keep them active all of Field Day. Our goal this year is to do better than any other year in the past. But, to do that, we need your help!

It was decided by the persons present to find out what it would take to mount an antenna that would allow Bill to work the Club’s repeaters from his home in Springfield. Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC volunteered to go to Bill’s house and determine where an antenna could be mounted and how much coax would be needed.

The drawing for the raffle was held. Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC and Ron Blessin, AF7A were the winners. $24 was raised.

Technical Committee Update:

The 900Mhz repeater has been re-worked and is ready to locate at the East TRS tower site.

The 6m receiver for the East TRS tower site is prepared and ready to install as soon as funds are available.

EchoLink is up and working well once again on the 145.270 repeater.

Open Discussion:
Kent Doucey, N0IRN led the balance of the meeting in discussion of what the club has and needs for Field Day:

Antennas: A3S, A4S, 80m and 40m dipoles, 40m vertical, and a 6m Par Omniangle
Coax: Coax is needed and being looked into. Arlen Evins, N6DDD will bring 500ft of coax to be used as needed. Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC has 250ft of 9913 and 100ft of LMR400 to be used as needed.
It was decided to get a 1x1 special event call for Field Day.

June Club Meeting - See You Tomorrow!

Come out tomorrow evening, June 11, at 6:00 p.m. to the June 2011 Nixa ARC Club Meeting!

We will be updating everyone on the progress of club projects, and will be doing the final Field Day 2011 planning. This year Field Day will be held at the High Pointe Elementary School, located at 900 N. Cheyenne Rd in Nixa. The new school will allow us to take full advantage of spacing out our stations to help us make more contacts.

We want everyone to come out and be a part of Field Day this year - we want lots of operators to come out. And if you want to be part of the planning process, tomorrow night is the time to be involved.

Thanks to Arlen and Marci Evins, we will be raffling off a necklace made out of a Buffalo Nickel and a keychain made with a Wheat Penny. For only a dollar, you will have a chance to win one of these for yourself, a friend, or a family member. All funds go to support the club.

Also, we will be taking up a collection to help out one of our fellow club members who is ill and recently moved from a covenant restricted area to a new house. We want to get him a Comet GP-15 antenna for his radio. We'll have more information about this tomorrow at the meeting, so help us out if you can.

Boy Scout's Merit Badge a HUGE Success!

On the cool, rainy day of April 23, 2011, just a day after severe weather, club members were at it teaching 27 boys from 3 different Boy Scout troops the ins and outs so they could get their "Radio" merit badge.

The radio merit badge was brought back as a "special" badge for this year only. When the club was contacted by a local scoutmaster, Terry Zembsch, KC0SQE, immediately offered to head up the project and got to work. The boys were enthusiastic and had lots of questions. It was an amazingly fun time!

The morning session was mainly spent teaching the kids the basics of callsigns, radio spectrum, modulation, and basic electronics with Warren Reynolds, KD0ELT, bringing his work van and showing the boys the different types of service equipment used to work on repeaters and radio equipment and talking about repairing Highway Patrol Repeaters and Shawn Baker, KA0RZE, talking about his job repairing broadcast radio transmitters.

The afternoon was a blast, too. They took the boys out to look at the antennas, and every boy was allowed to make a contact on HF. The boys were in awe that they were talking to people all over the place on HF without their cell phones! During the QSO section of the class, Kent Doucey, N0IRM, had turned around to answer another kid's question while one of the scouts was on the air telling a joke: "Do you know what the difference is between roast beef and pea soup?" The ham on the other end said he didn't know, and the scout said "You can roast beef, but you can't pea soup!"

The boys were indeed fun to be around, and everyone involved enjoyed themselves.

Again, thanks to everyone that participated in making this a wonderful, memorable day.

News and Announcements
BSA Radio Class: Terry Zembsch KC0SQE, reported there are nine individuals signed up to assist with the Boy Scout radio merit badge class. Terry also reported there are going to be 23 participants not including parents, and that several Scouts and some parents intended to pursue getting their Amateur license.

EchoLink: Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC reported that the EchoLink node has been repaired and has been running smoothly for the last month on the bench in his basement. The node will be re-installed at the 2m site as soon as possible.

Arlen Evins N6DDD announced that he would donate a high-power commercial VHF amplifier to the club for the purpose of rasing funds for the six meter receive site installation. Kent Doucey N0IRN appreciated the donation and said that every effort would be made to make the most of the donation.

Technical Committee Update:
Kent Doucey N0IRN gave the following Technical Committee update:

Ten Meter Repeater: The City of Nixa has agreed to amend our earlier agreement allowing the 145.270 repeater antenna on a one water tower to allow us to install a 10-meter receiver on a second city water tower and a 10-meter transmitter on a third city water tower. We are currently working with Verizon to get space inside their buildings, which both have generator power backup.

New controllers: We have purchased the SCOM controllers for the 927.5375 and the 29.680 repeaters with the Nixa Community Foundation grant as well as the coax cable hangers for the project.

6m East TRS Install: Currently, we have $1700 put aside for the installation of the 53.270 remote receive project and are in need of $2825 total. Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible gift toward this project, contact a club officer. Also, if you have any businesses that would be willing to make a donation, or if you are willing to "hit the streets" seeking donations, we have had success in the past with Allstate Insurance, Wal-Mart, Great Southern Bank and the Queen City Fraternal Order of Eagle Ladies Auxillary.

Open Discussion:
The balance of the meeting was turned over to open discussion on fund raising ideas and Field Day. An ad-hoc committee was formed by Kent Doucy N0IRN to come up with ideas to raise funds. Arlen Evans N6DDD, Marcia Evans, and Gary Doucey N0IRM agreed to look into and discuss ideas to raise funds.

News and Announcements

EchoLink: Jeff Kerr KC0VGC and James Adkins KB0NHX retrieved the EchoLink computer from the 2m site. The computer was locked up and would not reboot. Jeff is going to attempt to repair it.

HF Station: Kent Doucey N0IRN, Gary Doucey N0IRM, and Jim Adkins KC0IYI, worked this afternoon putting the Club HF station back together in the Fire Deptartment HQ radio room. Most of the station is back together and just needs a few more items secured and it will be ready to go.

Community Foundation Banquet: Kent Doucey N0IRN received the grant on behalf of the club at the Community Foundation Banquet. Kent reported that the club is well-repspected in the community. Many kind words were said about the Club and it’s benefit to the community.

Boy Scouts: Terry Zembsch KC0SQE is working with the local Nixa Boy Scouts troup leader to organize a class for the scouts so they can achieve the Radio Merit Badge. This is an excellent opportunity to present amateur radio to a group of young individuals. Any and all assistance is welcome and appreciated. Technical Committee Update

James Adkins KB0NHX gave an update on funds to complete the move of the primary 6m repeater receive site to the EAST TRS tower location. Presently we a a little over $1000 away from being able to order the install.

To help raise funds for the EAST TRS installation, the club is going to sell the following assets:

Club trailer

UHF repeater

VHF duplexer

James Adkins KB0NHX also gave an update on the 10m repeater. The club is meeting with Nixa City Council for permission to install the 10m repeater on two of Nixa’s water towers. There are only a few small items left to purchase to complete the installation of the repeater once we have permission to use the tower sites. We anticipate that we will be able to do the installation ourselves and we are planning to have it operational by the end of the year to take advantage of the upcoming solar cycle :-)

Nixa ARC Club Meeting - March 12, 2011 - MotoTRBO / DMR Presentation

Coming up not this Saturday but NEXT Saturday March 12th, is the March club meeting. At this meeting, John Rayfield, Jr., W0PM, will be giving us a presentation on the new digital format taking ham radio FM by storm - DMR, some simply call it MotoTRBO, which is how Motorola markets it.

John is attending the IWCE (International Wireless Communications Expo) this week and will have all the latest information on DMR technology, you can check out the IWCE website here http://www.iwceexpo.com/iwce2011/public/enter.aspx. John and his company, Rayfield Communications, are on the cutting-edge with this technology and are marketing several products they have designed that expand on the linking capabilities created by Motorola, see here http://rayfield.net/c-Bridge.

This is a very interesting technology, which allows you to carry on two conversations on the same frequency simultaneously, or allows you to do digital voice & digital data simultaneously. Unlike other digital technologies, the mobile radios and repeaters can do both digital and analog which allows analog users to still enjoy a nice repeater while allowing those wanting to experiment with digital to do so.

The club is still raising funds to complete the installation of the primary receiver for the six meter repeater at the East TRS tower site. At this time we are a little over half way there.

The Club donated five sections of Rohn 25 to TA Highspeed Internet Service in a show of goodwill and appreciation for the Internet service we receive from them at the Cox South, Nixa, and Republic repeater sites.

Call to Order
Kent Doucey N0IRM, called the regular meeting of the Nixa Amateur Radio Club to order at 1800 hours on January 8th, 2011 at the Nixa fire station on South Nicholas road in Nixa Missouri.

News and Announcements
We have received a $500 donation from Dick Higinbotham who had sold some equipment with the help of Dave Beckler. This money will be used for the 6 meter local receiver install.

We have received a grant from the Nixa Community Foundation for the sum of $1850.00. This will be used for the following items:

$950 to purchase remaining parts needed to install the local 53.270 receiver on the east TRS tower.

$450 to purchase a new S-COM 7330 controller for the 927.5375 repeater

$450 to purchase a new S-COM 7330 controller for the proposed 10 meter repeater.

Technical Committee Update
Internet was installed by Total Wireless at the Republic site at no monthly charge to the club. A router was installed and a JPS NXU-2 which is a point to point or point to multi point commercial VoIP device. This is used for experimenting with this technology for remote receiver sites that are too far for an RF link.

The NARC PR-1 (power reset device) was installed at the 145.270 site. This is the same as was installed at the Cox hospital site and allows for the power to be reset to the Internet radio router via DTMF or via the Internet when necessary.

The room at the fire station has been made ready by the fire department for work on the club HF station. N female connectors we placed on patch cables to go from the heliax running to the antennas to the radio equipment. No other progress has been made at this time.

The application for Special Services Club has been sent to the ARRL and we are waiting for a response.

VE Testing Update
The VE session was conducted at the OMAR hamfest this morning. 10 people were tested and 4 passing. 4 VE’s were present.

The meeting was turned over the Mike Edwards, WB9M from Lebanon Missouri. He give a presentation on the ARRL Logbook of the World program.

January Nixa ARC Club meeting THIS Saturday, January 8 at 6:00 p.m.

This Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. will be the monthly meeting of the Nixa Amateur Radio Club.

This month it's back to normal, with us meeting at the Nixa Fire Deptartment General HQ located at 301 S. Nicholas Rd in Nixa.

Not only will we give you some updates on the latest grant requests and donations for the 53.270 remote receiver project, but we'll also update you on some of the work going on behind the scenes. You won't want to miss it!

Also, we're up to 18 paid members for 2011, almost 1/5 of the way to our goal of 100 members in 2011. So, if you haven't renewed yet, you can do so this weekend at the club meeting or visit www.nixahams.net and then click "join" and you can do so online. See club Treasurer Jeff Morrissey, KB0WVT, to pay your dues Saturday.

And, to top it all off, we will be welcoming Bill Wheeler, K0DEW, and Mike Edwards, WB9M, from the Missouri DX Contest Club. They will be giving us a presentation on the whys and hows of the ARRL's Logbook of the World, aka LoTW. So if you're an avid DXer, just getting started, or thinking about getting started, this will be a presentation for you.

So pack the house this weekend as we welcome the first of many guest presenters in 2011 to learn about DXing and Logbook of the World.

Nixa ARC Seeks ARRL Special Services Status and 100+ Members in 2011

At the last meeting, David Bowman, WB0QIR, had requested we look into becoming a special services club with the ARRL. After looking into the benefits of this, and the cost (it's free!), we are going to file an application for this status.

In order for us to do so, we need to know how many club members are members of the ARRL. A certain percentage must be met before the club can apply for this status. The timing is right for us to get this information quickly. So, if you already renewed your membership for 2011, or joined for the first time, please go to the club's website at http://www.nixahams.net/2004/07/update-member-registration.html and fill out this application. Make sure you put in the "tell us about yourself" field which meeting you paid your dues so I know easily that you've already paid, then click on "register" when completed. Since you have already paid your dues, nothing else is required.

If you haven't already re-newed or joined the club in 2011, this is a SIMPLE and QUICK way to do so. Again, click on http://www.nixahams.net/2004/07/update-member-registration.html and fill out the information then click on register. Individual club membership dues are only $12.00 per year, and for everyone in your immediate family (those living in your household), the cost for a family membership is $18.00 annually. After you click on register, the website will then take you to the next page where you can pay your dues online through paypal if you choose. Select either the Individual membership ($12.65) or family membership ($18.82) and select "pay now". The extra amount tacked onto your membership fee is to cover the amount Paypal charges the club for this service. This will take you to Paypal's secure website and you will be asked to log into your account. Once you have done so, select "pay now" and your membership is complete. You will receive an e-mail with your receipt for the renewal from Paypal and you are officially a member of the club for 2011. The Nixa ARC webmaster will then add your name and ARRL membership status to the 2011 Membership Roster page, currently under construction.

Besides our presentation on Logbook of the World in January by the Missouri DX Society, we'll be having presentations on station grounding by Rayfield Communications, Electrical Interference tracking by James Adkins, a presentation on MotoTrbo, a new digital mode hitting ham radio by storm by Rayfield Communications, Field Day, and many more! Projects such as the installation of the new local receiver for the 53.270 repeater, re-installation of the 927.5375 repeater, the HF station installation & upgrades, and firing up of the club's new 1.5 KW amplifier for the 53.270 repeater top the list of projects we'll all be having fun with in the coming year. There should be something for everyone.

So, take a few minutes to join, and invite your ham friends to come out to a meeting in 2011, and encourage them to join the club, too.

News and Announcements

Both LDG tuners for the HF station arrived this past Friday.
Kent Doucey N0IRM gave an update on fire station HF station installation. Nixa FD took longer than expected to get the room prepared for us to do our re-install, hope to work on it in the coming weeks.
James Adkins KB0NHX announced the passing of the structural analysis received for the East County TRS site and the Club is clear to begin installation of the local receiver for the 53.270 & 927.5375 repeater & antennas & feedline. The quote to install the 6m and 900 antennas & feedline is $2,825.00.

To raise funds, club will be selling its trailer, believe we can get $250 for it.

Selling Compaq server cabinets for $100 each (have 2)
Selling Sinclair 220 duplexers, asking $450.
McKesson angel points grants also will figure into this project.

James also announced the January club meeting to have presentation of LoTW by Missouri DX association representative.
The Club is looking for net control operators to run the Nixa ARC club net on Thursday nights. Will run net once per month. James also gave an update on the rebuild of the HF station amp and the six meter repeater Bext amp.

The Nixa ARC will be having it's Christmas get-together meeting for fun & fellowship on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bandana's BBQ located behind Taco Bell in Nixa, MO. Nixa ARC Club Library

The Nixa Amateur Radio Club Library was only a dream until Bob Du Brul, WB0RJR-SK, through his brother Alan Du Brul, K0AWD, and Dean Gaines, KC0SQD-SK, donated 114 books to the club to begin a club library.

The club library is housed at the Nixa Fire Department General HQ at the same location as our monthly club meetings. In the radio room, where our club's HF radio station is located, you will find the club library on a shelf donated by the Nixa Fire Department.

Club members will be allowed to check out books for a month at a time, and the books can be re-checked for one month extra before having to be returned to the library for other members to access.

To check out or return a book, contact a club officer at a club meeting. While you are in possession of one of the club library books, you are responsible for it. So, if a book is damaged or destroyed, we will expect you to replace it so that we can keep this wonderful library maintained.

Though we currently just have one current General Class study manual, we plan to add multiple copies of each for use by club members to upgrade their license, or for non-licensed family members to use to obtain their technician license.

As you will see in the list below, you will not find any public library, and possibly very few personal libraries, that are stocked with so many great books about our amateur radio hobby.

If you are interested in donating books to the club library, please e-mail kc0lun@nixahams.net and a club officer will get in touch with you or bring the books to a club meeting for a club officer to inventory.

James Adkins KB0NHX conducted a voice vote to re-affirm the nomination of Jeff Kerr to retain the office of Club Secretary. The vote was unanimous that Jeff Kerr is to retain the office of Club Secretary. There were no other nominations.
James Adkins KB0NHX gave updates on the six meter repeater upgrade project. The structural analysis for the new location of the repeater main receive site has been completed and we are free to begin installation as soon as possible on the Greene County East TRS tower site. As part of this project the 927.5375 repeater will be relocated to the East TRS site.
Kent Doucey N0IRM gave updates on the status of the re-installation of the HF station at the Nixa Fire Department Headquarters. Robert Kentch KC0WSE made a set of shelves for the desk to hold the radio gear at the HF station.
James Adkins announced the unsolicited donation of an AT-100ProII and AT-600Pro autotuners from LDG for use at the Club HF station. Dwayne Kincade, the owner of LDG, contacted James Adkins KB0NHX after visiting the club's website and offered to help us any way he could. James explained our needs at the Club's HF station and Dwayne is sending two the two autotuners at no cost to the club.

Field Day 2010 Results Are In - Great Job Everyone!

Brian Umbenhower, K0OLD, found this year's ARRL Field Day results were posted on their website today. Here's how we came out this year:

For 3A Stations in Missouri, we finished #1
For ALL Missouri Stations, we finished #3
For all 3A Stations Nationwide, we finished #42
For ALL Nationwide Stations, we finished #211

We have already been discussing how to make the 2011 Field Day even better. Our goal, of course, will be to score more points! We're looking at an all-new location with higher ground elevation and a quieter noise floor and plenty of wide-open space so we can take advantage of that full 1000' feet and be in a public location.

Look forward to seeing everyone at our next club meeting on Saturday, November 13th at 6:00 p.m. at the Nixa Pizza Hut.

2010 Tour de Bass Bike Ride - Assignment Complete

Saturday, October 23, 2010 was the 3rd annual Tour de Bass bike ride, and the second one we have worked. With 19 volunteers from our club, Southwest Missouri ARC, and Greene County ARES, we manned 8 rest stops, a net control station and 4 sag vehicles. The 3 rides we were concerned about were the 35, 70 and 100 mile loops. On those 3 races, we had 276 people riding, with the 35 being the largest at 155 riders. We escaped the day with only one injured bicycle rider, and several very happy people who completed the 100 mile ride for the first time.

Event coordinators were once again very pleased with our performance, and commented on our high level of professionalism and our ability to move traffic quickly. Great job everyone! We utilized the 145.270 repeater as our primary and the 442.275 as our talk around / tactical channel.

Outside of the one wreck, mother nature tried to throw us a curve ball right at the end of the race when the rain started, but we didn't end up having any severe weather as we originally thought we might. We began watching a very strong storm in Oklahoma city on our radar at Net Control at about 9:00 a.m. and watched it all day as it strengthened, then finally fell apart as it came into Missouri.

Thanks to everyone that got involved and volunteered, your work did not go un-noticed. We had a great time and did a great job in the process.

Remember - next bike ride is just 7 months away - the Nixa Bike Ride 2011, see you then!

Help Wanted! Tour de Bass Bike Ride - October 23, 2010!

We are looking for 6 more volunteers for the Tour de Bass bike ride. Currently, we need volunteers to work the rest stops at Strafford and Turner's Station (east of Springfield on Sunshine) along with someone to ride in a vehicle with a SAG driver, and we also need someone with the bicycle repair team.

This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community and show those that support us monetarily that we are out there serving our community.

This fun event is not a race, but a ride. It is part of the initiative to get people out and exercising and is part of a week long effort put on by none other than Bass Pro Shops.

The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. and has a timed ending well before supper. I believe last year we were done by 3:30 p.m.

Chris Cochran KB0WZC resigned as club president effective October 6, 2010. Vice President, James Adkins has assumed the role of president. We are looking forward to starting this new chapter for the Nixa Amateur Radio Club.
The Club will be submitting a grant request with the Nixa Community Foundation as it has in years past.
A draft of the grant request was made available for review. The purpose of the grant request is to complete upgrades to the six meter and 900MHz repeaters.The club has received permission to locate the primary receiver of the six meter repeater to the Greene County East TRS tower site. The next step in this process is to provide a structural analysis. This will be done as soon as funds are available.
The Tour de Bass is October 23. We still are needing six volunteers to work the ride.
Nominations were taken for the position of Club Secretary. The following nomination was made by Brian K0OLD: Jeff Kerr, KC0VGC. The nomination was seconded by Jeff Morrissey KB0WVT. No other nominations were received.

The End of an Era: October 6, 2010

The Nixa Amateur Radio club is opening a new chapter in it’s history.

Chris Cochran has decided to step down as President of the club. Chris has faithfully served the club since it’s official inception in 2002. During that time he has given much time, effort, and personal funds toward club projects and has driven much of the effort for the raising of funds to support club projects. Back in 2001, Chris purchased the club’s first repeater, a Motorola Micor, that is still being used today for the 145.270 machine. Chris made it possible for the club to obtain the grants from McKesson Corporation, organized the club's golf tournament at Millwood in 2005, and was a key figure in getting the club's HF station on the air.

Chris’ dedication to the club and it’s success has been instrumental in the club’s growth over the past eight years. Chris’ affection for the continued success of the club has not changed. Chris is continuing to work with the club on current projects and will be helping us transition. According to the bylaws the current Vice President James Adkins has assumed the role of president. We are looking forward to starting this new chapter for the Nixa Amateur Radio Club and would like for everyone to be a part of it as we strive to continue excellence in amateur radio in Southwest Missouri.

With his trips to 62 different countries, and 85 DX entities, he has quite a broad view of amateur radio.

Field Day 2010 This Saturday & Sunday - Be there!

The Nixa ARC Field Day event is coming up this weekend at the Fountain Plaza shopping center parking lot in Nixa, MO. The spot is just north of the intersection of US 160 and Hwy 14 in Nixa on the East side of the roadway just north of Walgreens.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up, which begins at 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning, to operate, which is from 1:00 p.m. Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday, and to tear down afterwards, which promptly starts at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

This year, we will be utilizing one of the MSHP mobile command centers for our SSB station and the conference room in the back will be home to the 6m & 2m SSB / CW station. Using a PAR OA-50 and a KU4AB SQ-144 atop the 70' pneumatic mast, we hope to make quite a few contacts on 6m & 2m SSB/CW during field day like we did last year. We'll be using a 20' scissor lift to mount the A4S antenna on for the SSB station which will also have dipoles for 40m, 80m and 160m. In fact, as part of the "educational" project, we will be building the 160m in site Saturday AM!

The CW Station is going to be stationed in Gary Doucey (N0IRN's) 33' travel trailer with several antenna supports for their HF vertical and dipole antennas.

The Digital station, also capable of SSB, will be stationed in another of the MSHP's mobile command centers and will have another 20' scissor lift to support the A3S beam and 40m dipole.

We invite all amateurs out to this year's Field Day event. Last year we finished 25th in the nation for 3A stations and are looking to move up again this year. Each year our goal is to do better than the last. We plan on meeting our goal again this year, but we need you to come out and operate for this to be a success.

So, make plans now to come out and operate and / or log for an operator at Field Day this year. You'll get to see the club's Yaesu FT-950 and other club HF equipment in use for the digital station, too. This is one club event you don't want to miss!

James Adkins, KBØNHX, asked for the 2m contest results. None were given. The participation level was less than expected. Given that there is still interest in the event It was discussed to possibly revise the contest and hold another one at a future date
James Adkins KBØNHX, showed a short presentation of the work recently completed on the 442.275 and 224.280 repeaters. 200w amplifiers were added to each repeater along with two IOTA DLS-75 power supplies. The 442.275 repeater is working as expected. The 224.280 is experienced desense after the amplifier was added. The likely cause is mis-tuned duplexers. James will re-tune the duplexers at a future date.

The remainder of the meeting was given over to James Adkins, KBØNHX, for a presentation of Field Day rules and operation. Questions and and answers were taken and given.

N.A.R.C. Spring VHF QSO Party

The Nixa ARC is sponsoring a short contest on Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 1600 to 1800 local time. This event is open for all licensed amateurs. Invite everyone you know to participate.

The event will be held on 2-meters FM only. The reason for this is to allow everyone to be involved, after all, who doesn't have 2-meters? Even if you have a portable, you can get involved!

There are 4 classes of operations:

High-power base station (25w orgreater)

Low-power base station (less than 25w)

Rover (any station with a mobile setup)

Portable (Limited to the antenna mounted on the HT and the HT's power output level)

So, if you've never operated simplex, now's the time to do it. You can see just how far you can talk from your base station. For those of you interested in being a rover, or maybe you're a skywarn spotter, this is the chance to see just how good your mobile setup works. Since contacts are allowed via the 145.270 repeater only (they are worth less than simplex contacts), portables can get involved and have fun as well.

Get on the air, test your equipment, try your skills at contesting. You may develop an interest in HF contesting, which may encourage you to upgrade your license to work HF, or you may just be interested in seeing just how good your 2m FM station is.

James Adkins KBØNHX reported the club purchased and received the 60A 24v to 12v converter for the 2m repeater site.
James Adkins KBØNHX reported the club spent the Community Foundation Grant monies on two amplifiers, one each for the 440 and 220 repeaters. Also purchased were two 75A 12v DC power supplies for the amplifiers. Installation of the amplifiers at the repeater site is expected sometime in the next two months.
James Adkins KBØNHX announced that the Nixa Bike ride was coming up on May 22nd. The ride is anticipated to run from 6:30am to 2:00pm. The routes and rest stops are the same as last year. Volunteers are still needed for SAGs and rest stops.

Chris Cochran KB0WZC announced that it was still possible to RSVP for the Nixa Chamber of Commerce banquet. The cost is $15.
Brian Umbenhower K0OLD announced that it would be possible for the club to attend classes for emergency first aid and CPR for those wishing to be certified, and that these classes would be available at a reduced rate of $20 per class.
James Adkins KB0NHX announced that the Nixa Bike Ride is coming up May 21st. The routes and rest stops are the same as last year. We will need approximately 22 volunteers for the event.
David Beckler N0SAP announced that the W0S Titanic Special Event Station will be held April 10th and 11th at the Titanic Museum in Branson, MO.
James Adkins KB0NHX announced that Nixa Sucker Days will be the 2nd Saturday in May this year which coincides with the club's monthly meeting.
Alan DuBrul K0AWD annouced that Bob DuBrulWB0RJR SK estate would be up for sale at the Mount Vernon Hamfest on April 3rd.

News and Announcement

The 220 and 440 repeater are up and have been working as expected for over a week. IRLP is back in order as of today and is currently connected to node 3309 in Kansas City.
The Nixa Chamber of Commerce will issue the check for the Foundation Grant to the club at the Febuary 18th meeting of the CoC. All wishing to attend are welcome. RSVP is required and the dinner is $15 per person.
The 6m amplifier for the six meter repeater is still a work-in-progress. The control board for the repeater is being re-engineered to repupose the amp from continuous broadcast transmission to intermittent amateur transmission. This is not to lower the duty cycle, but is to change the way the control board monitors the status of the amplifier. We are awating final word on permission to a 220V circuit to power the amplifier at the six meter site.
