HOUSE BILL 136 UPDATE—RULES COMMITTEE PASSES BILL BY A 10-3 VOTE
House Bill 136 just passed the Rule Committee by a vote of 10-3 and will be referred to the full House floor for debate and Perfection vote. While this is a victory, it should be noted that several of those voting YES in committee stated that they would vote NO on the House floor. So, we have our work cut out for us. There are now three Representatives that we must contact immediately and daily to get our Bill through the House and referred to the Senate. They are:
Rep. Mike Cierpiot, Majority Floor Leader, 573-751-0907, [email protected]. It is up to Rep. Cierpiot to schedule our Bill for floor debate and Perfection Vote. We need him to do that as soon as possible. If our Bill does not come up as soon as possible, then we will run into the same situation we did last year when it finally did pass through the House but by the time it was referred to the Senate, there wasn't enough time left in session to be heard by the Senate. We DON"T want this to happen again. Call today, tomorrow, and every day.
Rep. Kevin Austin, Ass't Majority Floor Leader, 573-751-0232, [email protected]. As the Assistant Majority Floor Leader, Rep. Austin, is the next closest person to the Majority Floor Leader and has some influence with respect to what bills get place on the floor calendar.
Finally, the third person that we need to contact is YOUR personal Representative. As a constituent in your Representatives district, you have more influence than all of the rest of us outside their district. Please take the time to CALL first. If you can only speak to their LA (Legal Assistant) than do so. If you get their voicemail, leave a message identifying yourself as a constituent in their district and ask for their support. Leave your phone number and ask for a return call.
One thing is clear. The HOA Lobby is working overtime and consistently to try and derail our efforts. They are getting face time with our Representatives and promoting the HOA agenda against our Bill...daily! We may not like how things work, but if want to succeed, we must be equal to the task. If you can spend a day in Jefferson City, between now and when our Bill comes to the full House floor speaking directly to Representatives, please do so. Calls and emails can be deleted/lost/ignored, but personal contact cannot be denied.
